I asked my friends for any piece of advice or wisdom or a joke they would wish to pass on to their loved ones – here’s what they said.
Needs & emotions (including love)
“The greatest thing you’ll ever learn, is to love and be loved in return.” (Nat King Cole “Nature Boy”)
“There is no love sincerer than the love of food”
“Taking the time to understand one’s needs reduces hurt to oneself and inadvertently hurting others. Finding out what one’s needs are and how to meet them can’t be done by thinking alone but doing and seeing what needs remain. Only when some needs are met will you discover other needs e.g. one must have the need to feel loved met before one discovers the need to love. This has been described rather (too) succinctly in the Greek maxim ‘Know thyself’ and Maslow’s ‘Hierarchy of needs’ (though higher level needs can be met while lower level needs remain outstanding). “
Thoughts & ways of thinking
“Don’t worry” i.e. don’t dwell on potential future upsets.
“Stop moaning, life isn’t fair, just get used to it.”
“Live every day like it’s your last”
“Love with your heart but trust your grey matter to help you make wiser decisions in the years ahead”
“Have no regrets”
“People are always blaming their circumstances for what they are. I don’t believe in circumstances. The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and if they can’t find them, make them.”
“Never get to the point in life when you think you are too old to do anything you want to do”
“It’s not how old you are, it’s how you are old”
“You don’t need to be young to have fun! Continue to try new things, continue to be inspired by the world, and continue to grow. And that way, you’ll be ‘young’ your whole life.”
“If you look at the target as an enemy, you will never make progress. The target is your point of reference, not your opponent.” i.e. admire, take on board and make part of you the good in your competitors and opponents.
“A famous explorer once said, that the extraordinary is in what we do, not who we are.” (Lara Croft, Tomb Raider)

There is another theory which states that this has already happened.” (Douglas Adams “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”)
Everyone’s a pilot or a passenger – which are you? Probably best to find out before the plane takes off.
Never judge anyone unless you are prepared to be judged. Unless you’re a judge.
